Enjoying my clients while working on commissions!

Pinning down the Guess What!

Picture
"The Road to Good Intensions", acrylic on canvas, 30" x 40"
The Road to Good Intensions was delivered to Palm Beach, FL this spring!
Together, my client and I spent long hours discussing the flow of this painting: the color nuances, the proportions and the energy. Most especially we shared the desire to have a clean, colorful, fun and intriguing result.

My (new) client had seen a very similar piece of my art at the Orchid Island
Art Show several months earlier in Vero Beach. But before she could say, "I want to buy it!", the artwork had been sold.

The good news was the piece my client had seen was one in a series of four paintings. While looking over the other paintings, it was easier for both of us to discuss a direction for the new painting.

The idea of another painting was hatched to include a new width request which allowed for flexibility of the height, offering yet another opportunity to move the viewer's eye in multiple directions. Conversations were fruitful, and fortunately my client (an interior designer) and I happily developed delightful resolutions
without creating an exact duplicate.

The Thrill of a Challenge!

Picture
"Running on Sunshine", mixed media, 39 x 66”
Commission work can be very tricky, especially in the midst of a relocation from California to Florida in 2017.
But, thankfully, whimsey and freedom were in the air. This painting took on a life of it's own incorporating the Pacific Ocean with the hint of a green flash; the special interests of my clients: fast cars, black dogs, putting green, La Jolla's Dr. Seuss' funky trees complete with one new white puppy; and many other personal connections (like fashion, color and art).
I really enjoyed the process -- despite the fear and anxiety. The freedom to have a clean slate and opportunity to do whatever was the most marvelous challenge ever! I continue to thank my clients greatly!!!

My canvas maker, Giant Canvas and framer, Wonka Gallery, both in San Diego,
finished the project in record time beautifully. Thank you again John and Ryan.

 Cree's first Commission plus Video

Picture
Years ago (too many to count!), I was an absentee artist at ArtWalk San Diego. My artwork was kindly delivered by my other booth exhibitors representing Art6: Maite Agahnia, Bronle Crosby, Theresa Vandenberg Donche, Alison Haley-Paul and Brenda York, all of whom were working full time as magnificent artists in San Diego, CA. and still are!
So the story goes: A nice booth visitor seemed to be interested in my artwork. The artists chatted with this visitor about my paintings. and he got a sense of this artist named Cree.
It turns out that Dave Meyer of Reflect Films wanted to understand my art and
learn how I got involved as a painter. He called me a few weeks later and chatted at length with me. He set up a meeting at my studio, and he arrived with his video equipment. We talked for a great deal of time, and then (when I was a touch more relaxed) he started to ask questions while he went about his business of making a video of me as I explained herself.
The swap for this chance meeting and video production was my creating paintings of his three daughters. (In reality, this was my very first commission!)

Portrait work 101

"Maria in her hat", 20 x 24"

In 2006, I enrolled in a portrait class to test the water. For six weeks, while observing my photographs, I worked on two different portrait formats to study the spacial differences.
my friend loved the portraits!

Mark Kirby's work is thoughtful, graphically pleasing and well executed.
This is a show that you should not miss. It is amazing how thorough a small piece can be! Stop in throughout May and enjoy Mark's collages and paintings!
You will be happy you got a chance to explore his work.

On the other side of town, Cree was included at the
Artists Guild Gallery, with one of her CA paintings.
Something small to share with Vero and well received.
The gallery included many new painters and she felt
encouraged to be part of the Art Stroll in Vero.
