Cree is enjoying her Small World Explorations!

Often she has friends who have asked "don't you have some smaller pieces that I might purchase as a gift for a friend?" It didn't take her but a few days to get started on her small world...and already, she has two sweet pieces that have jumped out of the box! What fun!!!

Moving further into 2020

Taking a break from collage, I fell in love with this composition and decided I had to paint! And, I included a small piece of my palette to be consistent with my concept of working with collage. (Sometimes it is a treat to create all the colors and use straight lines...the artist in me does have a voice, and I have to listen to her!)

Collage has captured my heart!
Seems strange admitting that I am taking a jump off the mountain and focusing on my love of the blank canvas, the addition of paint and mostly collage. My experimenting is invigorating. And, as you can see, I keep working on my pieces.
I made the addition of two figures to this birch panel,
sharing our hopes for our country...making relationships thoughtful and learning from our past and growing into our better future.

Our world has changed. Our hearts are lost for answers.
But as Americans we will move forward

finding a better way to communicate.

Wow...2020 has been an interesting challenge. Aside from the weather and the Corona Virus, conversations are slightly less exciting, but I feel as though I have had a chance to re-think my art, and I've challenged spatial relationships and the results have been rather interesting.

The process of painting is a dream...I let the influences
move me or fight against my direction. Whatever happens
is a way to grow, to find my voice and to appreciate the opportunity to be in Vero Beach, FL.

Painting for my first two years
in Vero Beach at Deborah Gooch's Studio was a true blessing!

I remain very thankful!

Back to Basics...working with "left overs"

7/30/2019

I have to admit...I am addicted to not throwing anything away. I seem to be sure there is a better purpose for bits and pieces (perhaps better known as "left overs").
With this unrealistic thought, I can work with anything to create something that moves the eye and seeks out a yearning for challenging the flow of what is.
And, the best part is: the application of these pieces, coupled with my love for birch panels, I am not afraid to try anything. The small piece more commonly becomes known as my "sketch." What a treat it is to push myself in another new direction without stopping to hesitate making a number of "littles" which may or may not meet my standards.
This little one inspired me to create a 40" x 30" canvas that is also attached, that I think works out well, too.
But, you be the judge, please. Let me know what you think...send an email to me:
creescudder@gmail.
I would love to hear your thoughts.

So...what made me do it???
The best part of being my own boss is finding my way.
I love to create shapes, have open spaces and divide my canvas with action and intrigue. My love for painting has continued to grow with my addition of collage.
I truly feel like I am investigating a canvas' space with each line or color I add.  Please tell me what you think. I love comments. Thank you!

Left overs make for ideal challenges
6/4/2019

It is absolutely amazing how interestingly a morning's painting can advance with help from friends. Almost a two months ago, I walked into my Vero Beach studio having started this painting the day before and felt like it might be going nowhere all too quickly. But, with the power of suggestion from one studio-mate that included a "BORING IS OUT" magazine page, my spirits were lifted and my painting took on an entirely new life. I was delighted...using paint, collage and drawing as my new additions. I loved the results.
So...off with a U-Haul traveling behind our car, my husband and I headed from Vero Beach, Florida to Lake Placid, New York.
We traveled with all my paintings for a very special opportunity.
Our trip went extremely smoothly, with one glitch...this painting was damaged. Fortunately, a very wonderful artist, who has been responsible for many of the CATS musical costumes had a trick right up her sleeve to assist in this fix. Her studio was very large and had the perfect work table for stretching this painting out on, and in no time at all she created the solution for the gash.
I still have a bit of work to do to re-create balance, but it will be ready for:
my upcoming show
at
BluSeed Studios in Saranac Lake, NY
"Over the Rainbow and Out of the Box"
Opening Reception
August 15 5-7pm
on view thru September 14
Please plan to join in celebrating art!

Indeed, finding just one "left over" that tickles my brain to begin a painting, is all
I need to get started. This piece is fun, colorful and charming. And, as always I
loved mixing my paint and getting down to work.

One of the best parts of my day in our studio includes
treasures shared!

Special "pieces" seem to land on my work table that frequently call my immediate attention. Certainly this canvas holds together well with my having juggled a number of "left overs" to make a happy moment in time!
Collage has truly become my "go to" medium in my paintings. I love this process!

Thank you Studio Mates!

Sometimes . . . it only takes a momentary suggestion
to help my paintings begin to live.

A 36" x 36" white canvas is daunting at times...but...I started this painting with faint lines to see what would influence the painting's conversation.
I added some brilliant color, a few pieces of collage and then I saw the need for a Flamingo! Interestingly, no long agoI had read an article about Florida Flamingoes and learned just enough to know that I wanted to introduce you to this great being!
And, for the image to be important, I added black paint and left lots of white space. I think you can see the interaction at play.

(Whimsey is another facet of my work!)

Creating my paintings takes a great deal of thinking
and a lot of wonderful serendipity as well as patience

This Spring my work has continued to move in an abstract direction. I can't remember a time that I have ever felt so challenged, but so focused on sticking to a plan. Although each time I start a new canvas, I have trepidation and wonder if I really know what the heck I am doing. But...the good news is: I keep pushing at the opportunity to grow and learn more about art. I now recognize that I love challenges and moments in time to really look clearly at what I am doing. Thus far spring painting has been fruitful! I've wonder from abstractions to reality and beyond. I've pushed myself to keep moving forward and exploring new horizons. Plus, I've had a great deal of positive feedback
...just what an artist loves!
I am hoping spring continues to be bountiful, especially as I work on my show scheduled for this summer at BluSeed Gallery in Saranac Lake, NY!
I promise to post the invitation and images on FaceBook and Instagram.
Hoping Spring is fruitful for you, too!

Final Version (maybe)
Support from the Studio or maybe really a Challenge from the studio

I've mentioned before in my blogs that I work in a studio with several artists. I have a great time. And, every once in a while, I am thrown a challenge and usually I decide to go after the dare!

Over two month ago, just before the holidays, two classmates shared their paint
brushes with me -- I don't mean artists' paint brushes, I mean house painters' brushes -- really big ones. One brush was loaded with left-over orange/yellow paint and was accompanied with a bucket of more left-over paint. The other donor shared a paint brush loaded with red paint.

OK...so where did I begin? Even trying to write to explain this piece brings back my fear
of making this 3 foot x 4 foot painting work! Holy Cow...but the truth is: I believe I made this painting come to life by finding ways to move the viewers' eyes around the canvas!

But, what you see above is almost three solid weeks of getting past a very timid start. Adding and subtracting take on a much different language when painting, but the foundation works like our math lessons long ago.

Finding a creative solution is a necessity. The work needed is constant, but the courage to continue drives me to a better visual place and makes me stronger as an artist.

Progress Reports:
January 3, 2019
(top image)
It takes another look at a painting -- especially when hung on the wall in a new location -- to say to oneself: "I need to add just a little something more!"
And, thus I did exactly that with a few edits. And, now I am very pleased with this painting and have already another painting to share...see the "Welcome" page.
Yikes, artists have a ton of avenues to travel along, and I am really giving
myself the freedom to explore many more canvases.
I am submitting this painting for artistic review and I will let you know what happens.

November 8, 2018
(bottom-left image)
It appears as though you get another look at my painting in progress.
I am working in a great studio with lots of eyes watching me, and very thankful for the opportunity to have suggestions from classmates, as well as from our art guru, Deborah Gooch. The conversations are very thoughtful and helpful, and because I believe I will never stop learning, I listen carefully and try new things regularly.
I hope you enjoy this process as much as I do!
Thanks for looking and being supportive.

October 29, 2018
(bottom right)
It looks like I've started a new habit. I can't seem to finish my paintings as quickly
as I would like. I am laboring over details, changing up my color palette and exploring in every new way that I can imagine.
This new procedure is freeing me up, but it also is very challenging.
Sometimes I paint myself into a box...then I ask myself:
"What the heck are you doing?"
But, I remain happy! My art excites me, stimulates my mind
and allows me to really explore color and movement and composition.
I love being an artista!

My February opportunity to be included in the Orchid Island Art Show was perfect! The energy surrounding the artists and their artwork was passionate. Visitors enjoyed feasting their eyes on a variety of styles, colors and mediums. And, my getting to know more Vero Beach patrons was a special blessing.
I have to say I am wonderfully excited with the sale of "A City Never Sleeps." And, I am very happy that the couple who now has this painting is delighted with it's placement within their home. I am happy each of us is smiling!

"An Estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic are currently in the oceans, a third
of which is concentrated in the infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch --
possibly twice the size of the United States! Plastic is one of the biggest
threats to our planet while clogging our neighborhoods, highways, soil, beaches and oceans.
Ocean plastic pollution is killing more than 100,000 marine animals
and birds each year.
We humans are negatively affected as the toxic chemicals in plastics are contaminating our bodies!"
Bringing plastic awareness through art is the goal of this traveling show.
Opening Night drew a great crowd that was very positive about
viewing the presentations and listening to the artists express themselves.

I felt a great connection with each artist and enjoyed
the many conversations I had with visitors.

(Of course, I greatly appreciated having these two pieces included in the show!)

Pinning down the Guess What!

Picture
"The Road to Good Intensions", acrylic on canvas, 30" x 40"
The Road to Good Intensions was delivered to Palm Beach, FL this spring!
Together, my client and I spent long hours discussing the flow of this painting: the color nuances, the proportions and the energy. Most especially we shared the desire to have a clean, colorful, fun and intriguing result.

My (new) client had seen a very similar piece of my art at the Orchid Island
Art Show several months earlier in Vero Beach. But before she could say, "I want to buy it!", the artwork had been sold.

The good news was the piece my client had seen was one in a series of four paintings. While looking over the other paintings, it was easier for both of us to discuss a direction for the new painting.

The idea of another painting was hatched to include a new width request which allowed for flexibility of the height, offering yet another opportunity to move the viewer's eye in multiple directions. Conversations were fruitful, and fortunately my client (an interior designer) and I happily developed delightful resolutions
without creating an exact duplicate.

The Thrill of a Challenge!

Picture
"Running on Sunshine", mixed media, 39 x 66”
Commission work can be very tricky, especially in the midst of a relocation from California to Florida in 2017.
But, thankfully, whimsey and freedom were in the air. This painting took on a life of it's own incorporating the Pacific Ocean with the hint of a green flash; the special interests of my clients: fast cars, black dogs, putting green, La Jolla's Dr. Seuss' funky trees complete with one new white puppy; and many other personal connections (like fashion, color and art).
I really enjoyed the process -- despite the fear and anxiety. The freedom to have a clean slate and opportunity to do whatever was the most marvelous challenge ever! I continue to thank my clients greatly!!!

My canvas maker, Giant Canvas and framer, Wonka Gallery, both in San Diego,
finished the project in record time beautifully. Thank you again John and Ryan.

 Cree's first Commission plus Video

Picture
Years ago (too many to count!), I was an absentee artist at ArtWalk San Diego. My artwork was kindly delivered by my other booth exhibitors representing Art6: Maite Agahnia, Bronle Crosby, Theresa Vandenberg Donche, Alison Haley-Paul and Brenda York, all of whom were working full time as magnificent artists in San Diego, CA. and still are!
So the story goes: A nice booth visitor seemed to be interested in my artwork. The artists chatted with this visitor about my paintings. and he got a sense of this artist named Cree.
It turns out that Dave Meyer of Reflect Films wanted to understand my art and
learn how I got involved as a painter. He called me a few weeks later and chatted at length with me. He set up a meeting at my studio, and he arrived with his video equipment. We talked for a great deal of time, and then (when I was a touch more relaxed) he started to ask questions while he went about his business of making a video of me as I explained herself.
The swap for this chance meeting and video production was my creating paintings of his three daughters. (In reality, this was my very first commission!)

Please check out the video: https://vimeo.com/16837780
